10 Ways Selling is Different From Marketing

In the past, people felt that selling and marketing refer to one and the same thing. However, in the current business world, it has been made clear that selling and marketing are two different terms.

They do not mean one and the same thing. Selling means informing the customer of the product or service and helping the consumer to buy the product or the service. Marketing, however, is a much wider concept. It includes selling and various other marketing functions too. Selling is only a part of marketing.

The difference between marketing and selling is as follows:

1) Selling implies transfer or flow of the goods and services from the producer to the consumer. However, marketing awakens a desire in present and potential customers for the goods and services.

2) Selling is only directed towards the actual sale. It concentrates on the revenue and profit generated from the sale. Marketing concentrates on satisfying the consumers’ needs and demands.

3) Selling does not give any importance to the consumer. Marketing views consumer satisfaction as the most important objective of the business.

4) The production costs and distribution costs determine the price of the product in selling. The cost of marketing and competition determines the price in marketing.

5) Selling concentrates on making the goods. Marketing concentrates on determining the customers’ needs and desires and then producing a product or service to satisfy that desire.

6) There is no planning, forecasting, research and development in selling. However, all these concepts gain importance in marketing.

7) Selling concentrates only on profit maximization. It does not give any thought to the consumer. Marketing aims at complete customer satisfaction. Profit generation is only secondary in marketing.

8) Selling is oriented towards production and distribution. Marketing is oriented towards customer satisfaction.

9) Market research is very vital for every organization that wants to thrive and grow in today’s business world. White selling gives less importance to market research, marketing attaches huge importance to market research.

10) Selling is a very narrow concept, not suitable in the present business world. Marketing, on the other hand, is a much wider concept that is indispensable for today’s business community.

Every organization in the present business world should concentrate on marketing and not selling. When we satisfy the customers, revenue will start to naturally flow into the business and profits will start maximizing.
